South Korea mistakenly announced as North Korea at Olympics

 


When the South Korean athletes were mistakenly announced as North Korea at the opening ceremony in Paris, Olympic organisers have offered a "humble excuse".

The French and English announcers both called the elated team, which waved flags as it cruised down the River Seine, "Democratic People's Republic of Korea," short for North Korea.

The name was then, correctly this time round and as well it ought to have been in the first instance when North Korea's delegation sailed by.

North and South Korea were forcibly split in 1945, after the end of World War Two followed by increasingly-heightened tensions between both states.

When asked about the plagiarism, South Korean sports ministry said it would file a "fierce complaint with France in government level.

The ministry said in a statement that it "expressed regret over the announcement... whereby the South Korean delegation had been introduced as 'the North Korea team.

It said also that the second vice sport minister, Jang Mi-ran, an Olympic weightlifting gold medallist from 2008 had wanted to hold a discussion with IOC President Thomas Bach.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) said: "We are sorry for a serious and unacceptable mistake made by the announcer at tonight's ceremony.
